Denmark debuted in the first edition of North Vision Song Contest and has participated in every edition since then. The Danish broadcaster, Danmarks Radio (DR), has been in charge for the country's participation since the first edition. The broadcaster started hosting Dansk Melodi Grand Prix in every edition since the fifth. However, their entry for the fourteenth edition was selected internally due to being in the pre-qualification round of the edition, making it the first internal selection since the fourth edition.
Denmark is one of the most successful countries in the contest, having nine top tens including three victories. The first two victories of the country were achieved by Amaranthe with the first being in the fourth edition with the song "Amaranthine" and the second in the eleventh edition with the song "Drop Dead Cynical". However, the first non-qualification came in the sixth edition, where Julie Berthelsen got the eleventh place in the semi-final. The country's second non-qualification in the thirteenth edition with the eighteenth place in the semi-final is to date their worst result. The country is currently ranked fourth in the North Vision Ranking of Nations and it peaked at the first place after the second edition while its worst placement was seventeenth after the thirteenth edition.
Denmark has so far hosted four events related to the North Vision Song Contest; the fifth, twelfth and fifteenth editions of the contest and the third concert of the North Vision in Concert. The contest has been broadcast since the first edition by DR and had several commentators in charge either for radio or television. The spokespersons have been different since the first edition with the list inculding Medina, Emmelie de Forest and Tim Schou.
History of Denmark in North Vision
DR shown interest on participating in the contest very early. They confirmed their debut a few hours after the submissions of the contest had opened. They started hosting Dansk Melodi Grand Prix since the fifth edition. Their best result is so far their victories in the fourth and eleventh edition while their worst result is the eighteenth place in the semi-final achieved in the thirteenth edition. Denmark has so far been nine times in the semi-finals while they were a member of the big five in the second, third, fifth, twelfth and fifteenth, sixteenth and eighteenth editions, making them one of the countries with the highest number of big five participations. Denmark held the record of the best placing for the host country with the thirteenth place. The record was previously held by Sweden with the fourteenth place and later taken by Norway with the first place.
NVSC 1–10
Denmark debuted in the first edition of the contest already. It was revealed that their first entry would be selected internally. "Alive" by Kato and Electric Lady Lab was the first Danish entry in the contest. The entry won the semi-final and went on to finish as runner-up with 159 points, making the country part of the "big five" for the next edition. The entry for the second edition was also internally selected; "Kl. 10" by Medina was the song that represented the country in Reykjavik. The song also finished as runner-up with 180 points and therefore Denmark was part of the big five for the third edition also. Aura Dione was selected internally to represent the country in the third edition with the song "Reconnect". The song did not manage to keep the country's success and eventually finished twenty-first with 70 points. "Amaranthine" by Amaranthe was the fourth internally selected entry that represented the country in the fourth edition in Gothenburg, Sweden. Although the song got only fourth in the semi-final, it eventually managed to win the final with 175 points and bring the contest to Denmark.
For the fifth edition, the Danish broadcaster revealed that they would establish a national selection: Dansk Melodi Grand Prix was the competition that would select the country's entries for the next editions. The entry selected through the first edition was "Skylder dig ik' noget" by L.I.G.A which finished thirteenth in the final with 120 points. However, the winner of the second edition, "Butterfly" by Julie Berthelsen did not manage to qualify to the final of the sixth edition after achieving the eleventh place in the semi-final with 60 points, marking the country's first non-qualification. For the third edition of the selection, Aura Dione and Medina returned and competed against each other. Aura Dione was selected with "In Love with the World" and managed to get the eleventh place in the final of the seventh edition with 116 points.
The entry for the eighth edition was selected through the fourth edition of the selection: Nabiha represented the country with her song "Bang that Drum" which finished twelfth in the final with 107 points. DR decided that for the fifth edition of the selection, the songs would be only in Danish; Nadia Gattas with her song "Rejser gennem tiden" won the edition and represented the country in the ninth edition of the contest. The song achieved the twentieth place in the final with 69 points. The last entry of the country in the decade was selected through the sixth edition of the selection: "Supernova" by Tim Schou was the winner of the selection, making him the first solo male artist to represent the country. The song finished fourteenth in the final with 100 points despite actually being the winner of the semi-final.
NVSC 11–20
The entry of the country for the eleventh and first edition of the second decade was selected through the seventh edition of the selection. Amaranthe won the selection with their song "Drop Dead Cynical" and just like in the fourth edition, the country came fourth in the semi-final and won the contest with 231 points, the highest score for a winner by that time until Kazakhstan won with 236 points. The Danish broadcaster decided to continue hosting Dansk Melodi Grand Prix and the entry for the twelfth edition was selected through the eighth edition of the selection. Freya was the winner of the selection who then went on to finish twenty-first in the final with 73 points. The ninth edition of the selection selected the entry of the country in the thirteenth edition: Paw&Lina and their song "JKGLDOM" were the winners of the selection. However, they failed to make it to the final and achieved the eighteenth place with 36 points.
Despite actually starting the anniversary edition of their selection for the fourteenth edition, DR decided to postpone the selection and host it for the fifteenth edition due to being in the pre-qualification round. The entry for the edition was selected internally for the first time since the fourth edition: The Storm and the song "My Crown" represented the country. The band managed to win both the semi-final and the final of the edition with 171 and 249 points respectively, breaking multiple records: the first country to win after being in the pre-qualification round, the highest score in both a semi-final and final and also the largest margin between the second and first place in a final. The tenth edition of the selection was resumed for the fifteenth edition. Stine Bramsen won the selection with her song "Karma Town" and represented the country in the fifteenth edition where it placed fifth in the final with 134 points.
