Sweden debuted in the first edition of North Vision Song Contest and has participated in every edition since then. The Swedish broadcaster, SVT, has been in charge for the country's participation since the first edition. The broadcaster started hosting Fantasifestivalen in every edition since the first. However, their entry for the fifth edition was selected internally due to scheduling problems, making it the only internal selection for the country to date.
Sweden is one of the most successful countries in the contest, having eleven top tens including two victories. The first victory of the country was achieved by Malena Ernman in the third edition with the song "One Step From Paradise". However, Ernman also brought the first and to date only non-qualification to Sweden in the seventh edition, when she came sixteenth in the semi-final with the song "Perdus" and therefore failed to gain enough points to qualify for the final. The country is currently ranked eleventh in the North Vision Ranking of Nations and it peaked at the first place after the first, third and fourteenth, fifteenth edition while its worst placement was twelfth after the seventh edition.
Sweden has so far hosted two events related to the North Vision Song Contest; the fourth edition of the contest as well as the second concert of the North Vision in Concert. The contest has been broadcast since the first edition by SVT and had several commentators in charge either for radio or television. The spokespersons have been different since the first edition. Every edition, the runner-up of Fantasifestivalen is being offered to announce the votes.
History of Sweden in the North Vision Song Contest
SVT has shown interest on participating in the contest very early. They confirmed their debut a few hours after the submissions of the contest had opened. They started hosting Fantasifestivalen since the first edition. Their best result is so far one victory in the third edition while their worst result is the sixteenth place in the semi-final achieved in the seventh edition. Sweden has so far been twelve times in the semi-finals while they were a member of the big five in the first, second, fourth, sixth, ninth, fourteenth, sixteenth and twentieth editions, making it the country with the highest number of big five participations.
First decade
Sweden debuted in the first edition of the contest already. It was revealed that a national selection named Fantasifestivalen would be held to determine the entry. "Puls" by Timoteij was the first Swedish entry in the contest. The entry was automatically qualified for the final and finished in the third place with 154 points, making the country part of the "big five" for the next edition. The entry for the second edition was also selected via Fantasifestivalen; "Frozen In My Heart" by Martin Stenmarck was the song that represented the country in Reykjavik. The song finished 8th with 115 points and therefore Sweden had to participate in the semi-finals for the first time. Malena Ernman was selected through Fantasifestivalen 03 to represent the country in the third edition with the song "One Step From Paradise". The song won the semi-final with 131 points and thus qualified for the final, which it won with 194 points. Therefore, Sweden was automatically qualified for the final in the fourth edition. "Kvar I Nått Jag Lämnat" by Melissa Horn was the fourth Swedish entry selected through Fantasifestivalen. In Gothenburg, Sweden, Horn achieved the fourteenth place with 99 points, the best result achieved by a host country at that time.
For the fifth edition, the Swedish broadcaster revealed that they would continue Fantasifestivalen. Due to low viewing figures and several schedule problems, the selection was postponed and the entry was then selected internally. "Pumpin' Blood" by NONONO was chosen which finished fourth in the semi-final, thus qualified to the final where it finished third with 163 points. The winner of Fantasifestivalen 06, "That's the Way My Heart Goes" by Marie Serneholt was automatically qualified for the final and finished 17th with 102 points, Sweden's worst result to date. Malena Ernman did not manage to qualify to the final of the seventh edition after achieving the sixteenth place in the semi-final with 59 points, marking the country's first non-qualification.
Fantasifestivalen 08 was won by Ulrika who represented the country in the eighth edition with "Animal" and managed to get the third place in the final with 163 points and therefore brought another big five participation to Sweden. The entry for the ninth edition was selected through Fantasifestivalen 09; Helena Paparizou represented the country with her song "Set Your Heart On Me" which finished 7th in the final with 139 points. The last entry of the country in the decade was selected through the tenth edition of the selection: Alvaro Estrella with his song "All In My Head" won the edition and represented the country in the tenth edition of the contest. The song finished twentieth in the final with 85 points despite actually being third in the semi-final.
Second decade
The entry of the country for the eleventh and first edition of the second decade was selected through the eleventh edition of the selection. Getty Domein won the selection with his song "Dance With The Devil" which brought the Lingala language to the contest for the first time. He qualified just in the tenth place and then came seventeenth in the final with 92 points. The Swedish broadcaster decided to continue hosting Fantasifestivalen due to its high interest within the country and the entry for the twelfth edition was selected through the twelfth edition of the selection. Mahan Moin was the winner of the selection who then went on to finish sixth in the final with 142 points. The song "Azizami" brought the Persian language to the contest for the first time. The thirteenth edition of the selection selected the entry of the country in the thirteenth edition: Stockholm Syndrome and their song "Kalabalik" were the winners of the selection. They won the semi-final with 122 points and then finished as the runner-up in the final with 227 points, the highest score Sweden has ever received to date.
Due to the high interest of North Vision Song Contest and Fantasifestivalen within the country and the high success of Sweden in the contest, SVT decided to hold another edition of Fantasifestivalen. The fourteenth edition has marked a number of changes within the selection process, including the reduction of entries and the increase of finalists. The entrants Timoteij were returning to the contest with the song "Wildfire" after coming third in the first edition. Due to Stockholm Syndrome's second place, the trio was automatically qualified for the final where it came eleventh with 124 points. The fifteenth edition of Fantasifestivalen saw Dinah Nah coming out as the winner with her song "Taste Your Love" which represented the country in the fifteenth edition where it placed fourth in the final with 134 points. For the sixteenth edition, the sixteenth edition of the selection was held with Agnes Carlsson being selected internally. She performed five different songs from which "Human Touch" emerged as the winner. The song placed twenty-first in the final with 82 points, the worst result of the country in a final.
The seventeenth edition of the selection was held to select the song for the seventeenth edition. Velvet won the selection with her song "Friendly Fire". The song got the fifteenth place in the final with a total of 95 points, while in the semi-final it placed fourth with 94 points. For the eighteenth edition, the eighteenth edition of the selection was held. The selection was memorable for the bomb threat that happened during the first semi-final show which was the reason for the original process being cancelled and a new one resulting. SVT refused to select an entry internally due to the constant high interest of the selection process within the country and the importance of the public to have a say in the entry selection. Violet Days won the selection with their song "Screaming Colors" which went on to place seventeenth in the final with a total of 92 points. It is notable that the group has as well written the Danish entry for the competition, "Dreaming Kind" performed by Hannah Schneider which placed fourteenth with 104 points. For the nineteenth edition, Fantasifestivalen returned to its old format to determine the Swedish entry. Sophia Somajo emerged as clear winner and would therefore represent Sweden in the North Vision Song Contest 19 in Italy with her song "Klein Blue". The entry came third in the semi-final as well as in the final, breaking the record of points Sweden has ever received.
